I came across a news snippet from LA Weekly recently which I like because it outlines the immense creativity in humans and because it's a nice metaphor for overcoming separation.
There's a beach between Mexico and the U.S. with no signs, no parking lot, no lifeguard but with a huge border fence made of metal pylons which are rammed into the sand and going out far into the water. It's a place where nobody except the border patrol is supposed to come to.

Almost. This article is about a couple of guys (two U.S., two Mexican) playing a round of beach volleyball over the fence, which technically should qualify the game as a true international match. The fence is a bit too high for subtle technical playing, but the article sounds like the guys had fun nonetheless and liked the idea of pioneering a new type of game.
The whole article is written in a thoughtful but light spirit and reminds me a bit of the guy who pipmed his beetle (I especially like the bit where they're musing about breaching customs law).
